Corona Extra

Corona CapCorona is a beer from Mexico. It’s one of many beers I’ve had a lot since moving to New Mexico. As I understand it, Mexican beers weren’t very popular until Corona began suggesting people put limes in the bottles. Lime in Corona is pretty good, but I don’t have any.

Corona offers its beer in different sizes. They have the large, 24 oz that you see here (the last replacement of “the great quaffing” mentioned here) the standard 12 oz, and the 7 oz Coronitas (little Coronas). Often, you can buy a bucket of ice filled with six to eight Coronitas. It’s a great way to share with your friends.Corona Bottle

When I opened this beer, I thought I had taken the cap off a skunk. I didn’t expect this from a Corona, and I’ve never experienced it with one of these beers before. I wonder if this one is a bit old. It was a strong beer. The flavor was like five Budweisers smashed into one. It was a skunky flavor, but acceptable. Again, I think this beer might not have been representative of other Coronas. I’m looking forward to having some other Coronas at a later date.

Would I buy Corona again? Yes, of course. It’s a great, refreshing beer. Should you buy Corona? Yeah. Corona’s nothing too special, but it’s a good beer. (Just make sure yours hasn’t been sitting around too long)

I give this beer 3/5 caps.

Shiner Bock

Shiner Bock CapShiner Bock is the most famous of the beers in the Shiner family. The beers are named for the town in Texas in which they are brewed. The K. Spoetzl Brewery has been brewing beers in Shiner, Texas since 1909. It’s amazing that such a small town can house such a large brewery.

I’m sad to say that a bit of a disaster hit the last two beers from my Shiner Family Reunion pack – the Shiner Bock and the Shiner 101. I looked in the fridge this evening to find them (as well as every other beer that was in there) missing. I charged the culprit to pick up replacements. It’s for this reason that the beer pictured is 24 oz. Unfortunately, the 101 could not be replaced in this way, and I don’t believe I will be able to review it. This is very disappointing, since by my rules, the cap from the Shiner 101 can’t be added to my table because I did not personally drink the beer.

The first sip I had of this beer went down the wrong tube and caused me a great amount of pain, so instead, I’ll talk about the second. Honestly, there wasn’t much to it. Like the other beers I’ve had from this brewery, Shiner Bock seemed quite thin. What flavor there is seems pleasant. The beer goes down smooth, and after 24 oz, packs a little kick. Shiner Bock isn’t bad, but it’s not a beer that deserves to be the center of your attention.

Would I buy Shiner Bock again? Probably. It’s a beer that’s easy to find, and it’s a nice alternative if you want something a little darker than a Budweiser or a MGD. However, I’d put it on about the same level as those beers. Should you buy Shiner Bock? Well, you probably already have. Shiner Bock is a fairly well-known beer. If you haven’t had it yet, you should if only to know whether you’d personally want it again.

I give this beer 3/5 caps.

Shiner Kosmos Reserve

Shiner Kosmos CapThere are some beers in this Shiner Family Reunion mixed pack that I’ve never heard of. I have no idea what I’m getting into with this Shiner Kosmos Reserve. It’s described as being an American pale lager. That sounds promising.

I do have to say, if I haven’t mentioned it in a post before, that I’m enjoying these caps and bottle art. I feel like I’m drinking beer from a hundred years ago. Although I haven’t been terribly impressed with Shiner’s offerings so far, I will very much enjoy having these caps as part of my table.

Shiner Kosmos Bottle

The first thing I noticed pouring this beer was that it had almost no head, yet the first sip was very carbonated, almost seltzer-like. The flavor is very much overshadowed by this. You can really only evaluate the beer’s flavor on the aftertaste. It has a pleasant flavor, but I wish it was more present in the drinking. However, this is a great beer if you like burping.

Would I buy this beer again? I don’t think so. I like the name, and I’d like to say, “I’m drinking Kosmos,” when asked what I was having, but I’m not sure I’d enjoy myself while doing that. But, burping is fun (I’m easily amused), so I kind of want to chug a six pack of this stuff and see if I explode. Should you buy this beer? I wouldn’t push you to do it, but I wouldn’t try to talk you out of it. I would, however, try to get you to pour three of them into a beer bong and slam them into your stomach for laughs.

I give this beer a solid 3/5 caps.

Shiner Bohemian Black Lager

Shiner Bohemian CapToday, I’m sticking with the Shiner Family Reunion mixed pack. This member of the Shiner family is their Shiner Bohemian Black Lager. Black lagers are very popular, and it seems like I’ve had quite a few of them in my refrigerator lately.

Pouring this beer was very promising. It was a lovely dark beer with an almost perfect head. The first sip was hopeful as well, as it delivered the dark flavors one desires from a black lager. However, it began to thin very quickly. Shiner must be proud of the water they use because they definitely use a lot of it. The last swallow was almost flavorless.Shiner Bohemian Bottle

Would I drink this beer again? No. I wouldn’t avoid the beer if it was laying around, but I wouldn’t make the effort to seek it out. Should you try this beer? No. Spend a bit more money and get a black lager that’s a bit more full-bodied. It wasn’t vile or anything like that, but it was disappointing.

I give this beer a low 3/5 caps.

Lucky Buddha Enlightened Beer

Lucky Buddha CapBuddha beer! I don’t collect bottles, but if I did, this would be a beer I’d seek out. It’s not often beers are bottled in decorative bottles like this. Usually decorative bottles are reserved for liquors. As fun as it is to have a decorative bottle, it makes me a little worried about what beer I’m going to find within. If your beer is really good, do you need a bottle like this?

As one may have assumed, Lucky Buddha is a Chinese beer. It was another great find by Tamara. We had stopped by Total Wine to get her some zinfandel for her final entry into her A to Z blog. Of course, we had to check out the beer selection.Lucky Buddha Bottle

I had no idea what to expect with this beer. Being a Chinese import, I assumed that it would be a light beer. It was. I poured a light beer with a lot of head into my glass. The smell was slightly skunky, yet inviting. The taste was almost hollow. You could taste it around your mouth, but there wasn’t much in the center of your mouth. The aftertaste was pleasant. Overall, this beer was very similar to other Asian beers I’ve had – light and enjoyable, but unremarkable.

Would I buy this beer again? I don’t think so. The best thing this beer had going for it was the bottle. The beer wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. It was surprisingly inexpensive, however. Should you buy this beer? If you need a Buddha bottle, then of course. But if you’re just looking for a good beer, you might be better off with something packaged a little less fancy.

I give this beer 3/5 caps.

Negra Modelo

Negra Modelo CapSome beers like to think they’re champagnes. They wrap the tops of their bottles in foil to appear more fancy than other beers. Since I started collecting caps for the table, I’ve been very wary of these foil-topped beers. Most of the time, they have nothing of note on the actual cap. Thanks Negra Modelo. Your contribution to my table will be great to reflect upon. “What’s that blank cap?” I don’t remember. More than likely, this boring cap will get tossed.

Negra Modelo is from Mexico. It’s an older brew, celebrating its 87th year of production in 2013. It’s popularity as an export beer has been growing recently, so it’s likely you’d be able to find this beer easily.

Negra Modelo Bottle

The first sip of the beer tasted lightly chocolaty. It’s a clean beer and very unimposing. As dark and rich as the beer looks, it’s not very strong. If I were eating or absorbed in conversation, I might forget that I was actually drinking a beer. It’s not a bad beer, and I’d drink another if I had it.

Would I buy this beer again? I might, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to. I’d happily drink it if a friend were to offer one. Should you drink it? There are a number of mixed packs that include Negra Modelo. Right now, I know of a ‘Beers of Mexico’ mixed pack, as well as the ’18 World Beers’ mix from which I got mine. Pick one of those up. They’re fun.

I give this beer 3/5 caps.
